Lagos State Commends Coca-Cola’s PET Aggregation Hub, Calls for Greater Private Sector Action in Circular Economy
Lagos, February 2nd, 2025.
The Lagos State Government has commended the Coca-Cola System, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria and its bottling partner, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC), for taking a bold step in advancing environmental sustainability and circular economy innovation with the launch of Nigeria’s first Mega PET Aggregation Hub.
Speaking at the launch event on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, lauded Coca-Cola’s continued commitment to Lagos’ sustainability agenda, emphasizing that the initiative is a significant milestone in tackling plastic waste pollution, creating economic opportunities, and fostering a cleaner, greener city.
For over 73 years, the Coca-Cola System has been a key partner in Nigeria’s economic growth, and this latest investment further strengthens its commitment to Lagos and the nation. The Mega PET Aggregation Hub is poised to drive sustainable job creation, empower local businesses, and promote responsible waste management practices.
With an expected capacity to process 13,000 metric tons of PET waste annually—equivalent to 500 million plastic bottles—this initiative will:
- Empower over 1,000 waste pickers and urban miners, providing them with a stable source of income.
- Nurture over 70 green entrepreneurs, fostering local innovation in waste recycling and sustainability.
- Create additional jobs along the waste management and recycling value chain, contributing to Lagos’ broader economic development goals.
“This initiative is a clear demonstration that sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand. By creating a structured value chain for plastic waste, Coca-Cola is not only contributing to a cleaner Lagos but also unlocking new income streams for thousands of Lagosians,” Mrs. Oshodi stated.
The Lagos State Government remains committed to supporting corporate initiatives that align with its Net Zero vision by 2050 and drive environmental responsibility, job creation, and sustainable urban development. Through programs like Eco-Circulate and EcoNexus, the government is fostering collaborations that scale sustainable business models and attract green investments.
Mrs. Oshodi urged more businesses to follow Coca-Cola’s lead in embedding circular economy principles into their operations. “Coca-Cola has set a commendable example, and we expect to see more organizations take bold steps toward sustainability. Lagos State is ready to provide the enabling environment, policy support, and investment frameworks to accelerate a thriving circular economy.”
As Lagos accelerates its climate action strategy, the government is calling on the private sector, development partners, and investors to:
- Invest in waste-to-wealth models that create economic opportunities while reducing environmental impact.
- Scale sustainable business practices that support clean energy, low-carbon transportation, and eco-friendly production.
- Collaborate with the Lagos State Government to enhance regulatory frameworks and drive green financing initiatives.
“The time to act is now. We welcome corporate organizations that are committed to sustainability and look forward to working together to make Lagos a model city for circular economy innovation in Africa,” Oshodi concluded.
