Lagos Marks International Women’s Day with a Call to Accelerate Action for Gender Equality
Lagos, March 9th, 2025
As part of efforts to advance gender equality and sustainability, Lagos State hosted the Lagos International Women’s Day Celebration, organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs. The event, themed “Together, we can forge women’s equality; collectively, we can all #AccelerateAction,” brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss strategies for empowering women and fostering inclusive growth.
Among the distinguished speakers was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titi Oshodi, who emphasized the need for increased education and awareness on sustainable living for women. She highlighted how many women are already engaged in waste recycling, textile upcycling, and sustainable businesses but noted that a knowledge gap exists in understanding the full benefits of the circular economy.
“Ensuring that all women, regardless of background, have access to sustainability education is a step toward true equality. When women are knowledgeable about sustainable practices, they are better equipped to make informed choices, improve their financial independence, and drive environmental change. Together, we must bridge this gap and accelerate action toward a more inclusive and sustainable future,” she said.
She also spoke on Lagos State’s plan to distribute six million clean cookstoves to women, stressing the environmental and health benefits of the initiative.
“Access to clean cooking solutions means healthier families, lower costs for women, and less environmental damage. This is why we are ensuring women are at the center of this initiative,” Oshodi added.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, the organizer and host of the event, reinforced the importance of collective action in advancing gender equality. She emphasized that this year’s theme calls on individuals, organizations, and the government to work together in creating equal opportunities for women.
“Women’s empowerment is not just about fairness; it is about growth and progress for all. When women thrive, communities flourish. This is why Lagos is committed to policies that uplift and support women in all sectors,” she said.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor and the chief host of the event, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to empowering women through sustainable policies and initiatives.
“Lagos State remains dedicated to empowering women through sustainable policies and initiatives. When we support women, we build a stronger economy and a more sustainable future,” the Governor stated.
The event reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to accelerating action toward gender equality and sustainability, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration to build a more inclusive, equal, and environmentally responsible future.
