Lagos State Commends 7Up Bottling Company, Calls on More Corporates to Champion Circular Economy
Lagos, January 5th, 2025.
The Lagos State Government has commended Seven-Up Bottling Company (SBC) for its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, urging other corporate organizations to adopt similar circular economy practices that contribute to Lagos’ Net Zero ambition by 2050.
Speaking at SBC’s 2024 Sustainability Week, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE), lauded the company’s dedication to waste reduction, resource efficiency, and green skills development, reinforcing Lagos’ position as a thriving hub for sustainable business and investment.
Under the theme “Championing Circular Economy in Our Business and Communities – The SABI Way,” SBC’s Sustainability Week showcased the Green-Skill Schools Challenge, where ₦5 million in grants were awarded to schools across Lagos to encourage youth-led innovation in waste management and upcycling.
The initiative, which saw 330 schools compete, demonstrated how corporate investment in sustainability can drive real impact—empowering students with practical green skills while fostering responsible waste management. In addition to the grants, every participating student received ₦110,000 to further their sustainability education, with support from SBC, Zenith Bank, and the Lagos Waste Management Academy.
Commending SBC’s efforts, Mrs. Oshodi stated:
“Sustainability is not just the responsibility of government—it is a shared commitment that requires leadership from the private sector. SBC has demonstrated that businesses can integrate circular economy principles into their operations while also investing in the future of our youth. We encourage other corporate organizations to take inspiration from this initiative and embed sustainability into their business models.”
Lagos is actively positioning itself as the leading circular economy hub in Africa, and the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) is ensuring that businesses investing in sustainability receive the necessary support, incentives, and regulatory frameworks to scale their impact.
Through initiatives like EcoNexus and Eco-Circulate, the Lagos State Government is providing platforms where corporates can collaborate, innovate, and unlock new investment opportunities in waste-to-wealth initiatives, renewable energy, green infrastructure, and ESG-compliant business models.
“Lagos is open for businesses that prioritize sustainability. The state government is ready to support corporate organizations looking to transition towards circular economy models through policy incentives, green financing, and public-private partnerships. Companies that act now will not only secure a competitive advantage but will also play a key role in building a resilient, climate-smart Lagos,” Mrs. Oshodi added.
As Lagos accelerates efforts towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, the government is calling on more businesses to follow 7Up’s example by embedding circular economy principles, investing in ESG initiatives, and empowering communities through sustainability-driven programs.
Corporate organizations looking to align with Lagos’ climate resilience and sustainability vision are encouraged to engage with OCCE for guidance, collaboration opportunities, and access to sustainability-driven business incentives.
