OCCE’s Leave No One Behind To Impact 20K Women and Girls

Lagos, August 16, 2024

The Lagos State Government, through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE), has celebrated the successful closeout of the “Leave No One Behind” initiative. This pioneering project is set to empower over 20,000 women and girls across Lagos State, highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainability, socio-economic empowerment, and the circular economy.

The Leave No One Behind initiative, which began as a pilot program at the Special Correctional Centre for Girls in Idi-Araba, has evolved into a transformative force, addressing both environmental and economic challenges. “This initiative is a shining example of our commitment to inclusivity and sustainability,” said Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy during the opening remark. “We have demonstrated that through the circular economy, we can create wealth, reduce carbon emissions, and generate jobs across Lagos State, all while empowering the most marginalised members of our community.”

In partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Leave No One Behind initiative has provided essential skills in circular economy practices to thousands of women and girls. The impact of this initiative is evident, with over 1,000 community members engaged in collecting 200 kg of recyclables weekly. This not only supports community welfare but also generates new revenue streams for Lagos State.

The installation of a biogas digester, producing 100 kg of methane gas, has provided an eco-friendly alternative to LPG. “Our investment in sustainable solutions like the biogas digester not only reduces our carbon footprint but also showcases the practical benefits of circular economy practices,” Mrs. Oshodi added.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Opeyemi George, praised the initiative’s impact. “This moment marks the culmination of an extraordinary journey, a journey that has empowered and inspired over 20,000 girls and women in Lagos to envision a brighter future within the framework of the circular economy,” the governor remarked. “By turning challenges into opportunities and waste into wealth, this initiative has set a new standard for how we approach sustainable development in Lagos State.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also charged the beneficiaries to continue striving for excellence and to recognise their potential as future leaders. “You are the future of Lagos, the future of Nigeria, and the future of our world. You have the power to drive change, create sustainable solutions, and inspire others to follow in your footsteps,” he urged.

The Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, speaking at the closeout event, emphasised the broader impact of the initiative. “The ‘Leave No One Behind’ initiative is not just a program; it is a movement designed to ensure that every segment of our society is integrated into the circular economy framework,” Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre stated. “Through this initiative, we are laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and prosperous Lagos State, where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.”

The Leave No One Behind initiative aligns seamlessly with the Lagos State T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda, which focusses on wealth creation, job generation, and environmental stewardship. The initiative’s success has already led to job creation, with 50 young girls employed during the pilot phase and plans to scale up to 1,000 jobs as the program expands. “We are not only creating jobs but also empowering our youth to be leaders and innovators in a rapidly changing world,” the Commissioner added.

As the initiative concludes, OCCE and its partners are committed to scaling this model across Lagos State, amplifying its social and economic benefits. “We are just beginning to scratch the surface of what is possible through the circular economy,” Mrs. Oshodi stated. “Our vision is to expand this initiative, ensuring that every community in Lagos reaps the benefits of sustainable development.”

The closeout event also served as a platform to acknowledge the vital partnerships that made this initiative possible. Mrs. Oshodi extended her deepest gratitude to all stakeholders, including Biofil Technologies Limited, FABE Foundation, GIVO, D Nigeria Limited, Richbol Environmental Services, Retreasure, PAKAM, LAWMA, UECO, KIC Cleaners, Arup, GB Foods, Wema Bank, and others. “Your collaboration has been crucial in advancing our vision and ensuring the impactful results we celebrate today,” she said. As the OCCE continues to lead on sustainability initiatives, it remains a pivotal resource for addressing climate change and circular economy matters in Lagos State. The achievements of the initiative mark a significant step towards a sustainable future where no one is left behind.
