OCCE Supports Sustainability Education at Nestlé’s Healthy Kids Closeout Event

Lagos, June 26, 2024

The Office of the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) has once again solidified its position as a leader in environmental sustainability and climate advocacy by supporting efforts to empower the next generation at Nestlé’s Healthy Kids Closeout event. The OCCE’s involvement emphasises the importance of sustainability education and climate awareness, positioning the office as a vital hub for sustainability efforts in Lagos State.

Delivering the keynote address, the Special Adviser, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, underscored the indispensable role of educating children about sustainability and the circular economy, particularly at such formative stages. She described the Healthy Kids program as a groundbreaking initiative that nurtures eco-conscious leaders who will drive the future of Lagos’ environmental agenda.

“Empowering young minds with the knowledge of sustainability is not just an educational pursuit; it’s a survival strategy for our planet,” said Mrs. Oshodi. “At the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy, we view our role as pivotal in shaping a future where environmental responsibility is embedded in everyday life. Programs like Nestlé’s Healthy Kids are more than initiatives; they are crucial stepping stones towards building a greener, more sustainable Lagos.”

The OCCE has been instrumental in promoting initiatives that drive sustainable practices across Lagos State, from youth-centred programs to large-scale partnerships with both local and international  organizations. Mrs. Oshodi announced that the office is exploring future collaborations with private and public sectors to strengthen sustainability frameworks, particularly those aimed at integrating circular economy principles into school curricula.

“The circular economy is central to our mandate at OCCE. It is a transformative model that redefines waste as a resource, ensuring that we reduce our reliance on finite natural resources while fostering economic growth,” she added. “By incorporating these practices into early education programs like Nestlé’s Healthy Kids, we are creating a generation that understands the environmental and economic benefits of sustainability. These young leaders will not just inherit the challenges of climate change; they will have the tools to solve them.”

OCCE’s presence at the Nestlé event goes beyond mere participation; it highlights the office’s proactive approach in mobilising diverse sectors to promote climate education. Mrs. Oshodi further emphasised that Lagos’ sustainability agenda can only be achieved through multi-stakeholder engagement, including families, schools, businesses, and governmental bodies.

“As we navigate the challenges of climate change, Lagos cannot afford to stand idle. We must continue to build partnerships that promote sustainability at every level, starting with the youngest members of our society,” Mrs. Oshodi stressed. “The Healthy Kids initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when we align our educational and environmental goals. Together, we are not only protecting the future of our children but also the future of Lagos as a thriving, sustainable city.”

The event marked a significant milestone in OCCE’s ongoing efforts to champion sustainability, climate action, and the circular economy across Lagos State. The office continues to push boundaries, advocating for climate-conscious policies, educational reforms, and practical solutions that ensure Lagos remains a beacon of sustainability in Nigeria and beyond.
